The Ultimate Crossover: When Cinco de Mayo Met Taco Tuesday in Bangkok
The universe rarely gets its calendar this right: Cinco de Mayo landed on Taco Tuesday.
Two occasions that already give you every excuse to eat tacos suddenly landed on the same day. As someone who grew up between cultures, I’m always drawn to those little moments when different parts of the world unexpectedly overlap.
In Bangkok, though, the crossover seemed to pass quietly.
Except at La Monita Taqueria.
I went looking for the celebration and found it in Ploenchit, where the restaurant was already packed by the time I arrived. The salsa bar was busy, plates were moving through the room, and the Cinco de Mayo set had turned an ordinary Tuesday into something considerably more colorful.

A Little Mexico in Ploenchit
La Monita sits inside Mahatun Plaza, just a short walk from Ploenchit BTS. Outside, it’s classic Bangkok business district: polished towers, glass, traffic, and people moving between offices and the skytrain.
Inside, the mood shifts completely.
Color everywhere. People gathered around the salsa bar, building their own combinations of heat and flavor. Tables filling up. And tacos suddenly seemed like the only appropriate thing to be eating on a Tuesday.

The Cinco de Mayo Feast
Then came the celebration set: 1,090++ spread across an enormous platter.
Golden taquitos. Ceviche tostadas. Mini quesadillas with cheese stretching out of their edges. Al pastor tacos topped with grilled pineapple, the edges darkened from the grill.
Along with it, a mango michelada brought another hit of color, followed of course by dessert: a soft, glossy flan.
There was something satisfying about seeing everything arrive together. So many shapes, textures, colors, and little details competing for attention on one enormous platter.
And despite the restaurant being packed, the food kept moving. Plates appeared, disappeared, and were replaced by something else before you really had time to take in what had just arrived.

You can spend an afternoon surrounded by towers, traffic, skytrains, and office workers and then walk through one door and find yourself staring at a platter that feels like it belongs somewhere thousands of miles away.
Not every discovery needs to be monumental.
Sometimes the calendar just lines up perfectly, and a Tuesday in Bangkok happens to look a little like Mexico.
